Bartow County Schools originally shared this information in February; however, we wanted to revisit and reinforce these expectations as we wrap up the 2025–2026 school year and prepare for the 2026–2027 school year.
All personal electronic devices including headphones (wired headphones are ok that plug into laptop are permitted), smart watches, smart glasses, gaming systems, personal laptops, and cell phones must be stored in a student’s backpack for the entire school day. This expectation includes class change as well as lunch. Students who access their devices during the school day are subject to the Code of Conduct.
This expectation aligns with Georgia’s Distraction-Free Education Act (HB 340), which requires school systems to limit student access to personal electronic devices during the school day to create a focused, distraction free learning environment.
Field trips should remain distraction-free. If backpacks are permitted on a trip, devices should remain stored in backpacks as outlined above.
This law does not apply to after school or extracurricular activities outside the regular school day.
Students with disabilities who require access to personal electronic devices as part of an approved Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504 Plan, or Individual Health Plan will continue to receive those accommodations in accordance with state and federal requirements.
If students need to make a phone call during the school day, they may do so through the front office. Parents are welcome to contact the front office to communicate transportation changes; however, we ask that students come to school each day knowing their expected mode of transportation home.

Bartow County School System Announcement
The Bartow County School System has updated its cell phone and personal electronic device expectations in accordance with Georgia House Bill 340, the Distraction-Free Education Act. This legislation requires school systems across the state to establish clearer, more consistent guidelines that limit personal device use during the instructional day. These changes align with our shared commitment to maintaining safe, focused, and engaging learning environments for all students.
These updated expectations will take effect at the beginning of the 2026–2027 school year. Under the revised guidelines, students in grades K–8 will be expected to keep cell phones and personal electronic devices secured in their bookbags for the duration of the school day, from the tardy bell through dismissal. Expectations will be applied consistently across all schools to ensure clarity and fairness for students and families. If expectations are not met, schools will address the situation in accordance with the Bartow County School System Code of Conduct, as outlined in the student handbook.
We recognize that some students rely on technology to support medical needs or accommodations outlined in an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Appropriate accommodations will continue to be provided in these circumstances, and schools will clearly communicate with families regarding procedures for emergencies and school‑related communications during the instructional day.
