PLES is proud to recognize Mrs. Kelly McGaha who was voted our Teacher of the Year (TOTY) for 2025-2026 school year. McGaha shared what the award means to her and how her journey as an educator continues to grow.
“Personally, this award affirms that the time, energy, and heart that I have poured into my students has made a real impact. It is incredibly rewarding to know that my colleagues recognize and appreciate my dedication.”
McGaha credits the support of her coworkers over the past seven years at PLES for helping shape the teacher she is today. In the classroom, McGaha focuses on building strong relationships and creating a positive environment where every student feels seen, heard, and valued. She treats her students like family and holds them to high expectations, no matter their background or ability. “I treat my students how I want my personal children to be treated,” McGaha stated.
Now in her eleventh year of teaching, she was inspired by a high school teacher who believed in her when she needed it most. That experience planted a seed that continues to grow each year with every new class. This year, Mrs. McGaha started a soil types garden to help her students have a standards-based hands-on experience to learn about growing in sand, clay, and loam. The supplies were donated by the Pine Log community which is just one example of McGaha's positive impact and leadership.
One of her most memorable experiences at PLES has been working alongside groups of women who “empower my soul.” She says the friendships built during those years are priceless and lasting.
She continues to grow as an educator by learning from mistakes, pursuing advanced degrees, and staying open to new ideas and strategies.
To new teachers, McGaha offers this advice:
“Build relationships with your students. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Give yourself grace. Focus on growth, not perfection. And always remember your ‘why.’”
Her favorite quote as a teacher is one that speaks to the heart of what she believes:
“And if those children are unresponsive, maybe you can’t teach them yet, but you can love them. And if you love them today, maybe you can teach them tomorrow.” – Jeffrey Holland
Congratulations to our Teacher of the Year, Kelly McGaha! Thank you for your heart, your dedication, and your impact on Pine Log students every day.
