Promotional thank-you graphic from Pine Log Elementary recognizing Tree Amigos of America for donating a truckload of wood chips to expand the school’s Killdeer sanctuary. One photo shows the delivered pile of wood chips, and another shows four students standing in front of the loaded truck with a Tree Amigos employee. The graphic also displays contact information for Tree Amigos owner Shane Barker (770-676-2300) and explains that fourth-grade students selected wood chips to help create habitat that blends with the natural camouflage used by nesting Killdeer birds.

The PLES STEM program owes part of its success to donations from local companies, such as Tree Amigos of America. Owner Shane Barker, gladly agreed to donate and deliver a truckload of wood chips to the sanctuary expansion project.

Fourth-grade students chose to add wood chips to the sanctuary expansion because this PBL started when Killdeer used the wood chips on the playground to blend with their brown feathered backs while they sit on the nest protecting them from aerial predators.

Students shoveled and raked the woodchips into place to make a possible nesting site for the Killdeer birds. Historically, PLES has tracked the Killdeer nests from February through June on our campus.

Contact Shane Barker at 770-676-2300 for residential and commercial tree service including emergency tree removal.
