Superintendent helping student with a project by placing stickers on a board.

As we continue our journey to strengthen literacy practices throughout our system, I want to express my sincere gratitude to our teachers, literacy coaches, and building principals across the district. Change can be challenging, especially when it requires us to move away from traditional practices that may feel comfortable but do not always produce the level of student learning outcomes we desire.

Throughout our PLC journey focused on literacy, we identified several barriers that prevented students from learning at high levels. One of the most significant challenges was the absence of a curriculum grounded in the Science of Reading and designed with the level of rigor necessary to challenge students academically every day.

I am deeply appreciative of our Board of Education members for their support and commitment to our students. Their decision to invest $2 million in the adoption of the Arts & Letters curriculum was a bold step forward in strengthening literacy instruction across our district.

At the same time, we asked our English Language Arts teachers to step outside of long-standing practices and embrace learning a new curriculum. I could not be prouder of the response from our teachers. They leaned into the collaborative process and, through our PLC structures, truly acted their way into a new way of thinking. Change can feel challenging, stressful, and even overwhelming at first, but our educators remained committed to the work.

Together, our teachers, literacy coaches, and principals collaboratively unpacked Module 1 and worked diligently to understand the intent and structure of the curriculum. Because of their dedication and perseverance, we are now seeing exceptional instructional practices taking place in classrooms across our system.

When visiting English Language Arts classrooms, the difference is clear. Student engagement is at an all-time high. Students are building vocabulary, engaging in meaningful conversations, and thinking more deeply about their learning each day.

Our hard work is paying off, and I want to thank each of you for your continued investment in our students and their future.
