WHEREAS, the Board of Education recognizes the financial challenges many senior citizens face due to rising property values and increasing taxes; and

WHEREAS, providing meaningful property tax relief helps support senior citizens on fixed incomes and allows them to remain in their homes and communities; and

WHEREAS, the current senior homestead exemption includes a sunset provision that limits the long-term certainty and stability of this tax relief program; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Education supports efforts to make the senior homestead exemption permanent and to expand eligibility requirements so that additional property owners age 65 and older may benefit from property tax relief;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Education formally supports the removal of the sunset clause associated with the senior homestead exemption in order to make the exemption permanent; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Education supports expanding the eligibility requirements for the exemption to provide property tax relief to a greater number of qualifying property owners age 65 and older; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board requests that any proposed legislation or local action related to these changes be brought forward in time for consideration and action by the Board at its September 21, 2026 board meeting; and
