Over the past four years, math instruction across the Bartow County School System has undergone a significant transformation. What began as preparation for Georgia’s new K-12 Mathematics Standards during the 2023-24 school year has evolved into a systemwide commitment to strengthening math teaching and learning through sustained professional development, collaboration, and support.
The BCSS initially focused on helping teachers understand the new standards, explore instructional resources, and prepare for shifts in classroom instruction. As the work progressed, educators leveraged Georgia Department of Education math learning plans, released assessment items, and intervention resources to further enhance instructional practices and support student success.
School leaders and academic coaches have played a key role in this effort. Principals and coaches participated in ongoing professional learning, with coaches providing direct support to teachers in their schools. Through this continuous cycle of learning and implementation, the BCSS has steadily strengthened math instruction and improved student outcomes.
To further expand collaboration, the district developed Math Instructional Walks, creating opportunities for teachers and academic coaches to observe classrooms and learn from one another across the system. Originally designed to strengthen instructional practices, these visits have grown into a powerful network of shared learning and professional collaboration among educators districtwide.
In the 2025-26 school year, the BCSS strengthened its academic coaching model by establishing a content-specific math coach in every school. These coaches work alongside teachers by modeling lessons, co-teaching, and supporting small-group instruction. This job-embedded professional learning allows teachers to see effective strategies in action and immediately apply new learning within their classrooms. The approach provides targeted support tailored to the needs of both teachers and students.
The impact of these efforts is evident in student achievement. In 2022-23, 35.8% of BCSS students in grades 3 through Algebra: Concepts and Connections scored at the Proficient Learner level or higher on state math assessments. By 2025-26, that number had climbed to 47.9%, representing a 12.1 percentage point increase in just three years.
Particularly impressive gains have been made in eighth-grade mathematics and Algebra: Concepts and Connections. Eighth-grade proficiency increased from 37% in 2022-23 to 57.9% in 2025-26, an improvement of more than 20 percentage points that exceeded the state average. Algebra: Concepts and Connections also demonstrated steady growth, rising from 39.5% proficient or above in 2023-24 to 53.9% in 2025-26, also surpassing the state average.
While district leaders celebrate this progress, they remain focused on continuous improvement. The BCSS continues to analyze student achievement data, provide targeted professional learning for teachers, and identify additional supports for students who need them. Every school offers office hours at the beginning of the school day, giving students access to personalized academic support and opportunities to strengthen their mathematical understanding.
As the BCSS continues this journey, the focus remains clear: providing strong, effective math instruction and ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed. Through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to excellence, the district is building a foundation for continued growth in mathematics achievement for years to come.
