First-grade students presented puppet shows based on the series There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed... Students worked in groups to read the book, design and create the puppets using cardstock and wooden skewers, then practiced retelling the story to build fluency. The use of flashlights was a connection to the shadows and light unit for first grade.
